Are you intrigued with how an explainer video is made? In this article you will learn about the whole video production process in depth. Take in all the knowledge you need and learn to identify the 7 components that every animated marketing video has during the production process.
The script is like the “what”, the message you want to pass on to your potential customers. It´s the written structure that will set the basis for the whole video and consequently, we can say it´s one of the most important parts of the video production process. The script needs to follow some basic guidelines to meet its goals. You can download our free eBook on How to write a script for an explainer video to understand the basics.
Tip: The script needs to be developed by a professional scriptwriter. The best thing you can do is hire a professional talented team who can assist you with this and the rest of the production process. The storyboard, is like the “how”. It´s a kind of sketch that gives you the chance to pre-visualize all the actions that will take place in the video like in the form of a graphic novel. The storyboard also includes camera movements, shots, transitions and some other details. Who is in charge of developing the storyboard? Generally, a director with experience in film and arts and/or graphic design is the chosen one to accomplish this stage.
The story you will tell your target audience will be written on the script, but of course it needs to be “told” to them: the person in charge of doing this is the voice-over professional, an off-screen narrator who reads the story on the script. Remember that it´s vital that you hire a native professional voice-over artist so that their accent makes your audience feel connected to the story you are telling.
Style frames are another key element of the video production process: to have a big picture of the true quality of the video before it´s complete, you can pick up some frames from the storyboard and draw them in high resolution, applying colors, backgrounds, landscapes, characters and other elements as if they were in the final version. Watch this example:
ILLUSTRATIONS / DESIGNS
In this stage, professional illustrators work on every graphic element that will be included in the video and that will be animated afterwards, such as the characters, backgrounds, typographies and more. Of course, the illustrations and designs will depend directly on the animated explainer video style you´ve chosen.
This is when the video comes alive! A group of professional animators work hand in hand to bring all the graphic elements into motion. It is vital that you choose a talented team to carry this stage out, since the characters need to be as natural, lively and human as possible…and this can only be accomplished with a team of experienced animators.
This stage involves editing the music, mixing sound effects and making audio adjustments to enhance every aspect of the video and reinforce the power of the message you´re passing on. The background music also adds some emotional effect to the story. Keep in mind that the music and sound effects can be as important as the video itself, so work carefully on these details too.
